One Night Only 2026 Movie Review
I saw “One Night Only” on a bored Monday on 08/10/2026. The movie has gotten some pushback from critics. As of my writing, it has 44% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic … I’m actually going to buck the trend and rate this one a little higher. I think it’s a notch better than a lot of critics say.
The movie is, simply, a very easy watch. The run-time flew by as I sat in the theater, and I didn’t get bored. The movie has an absurd premise involving a government law against premarital sex, but it’s easy to just shut your brain off and accept it during the film’s runtime.
The 2 leads, Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, have great chemistry and charisma. I found their characters likeable to the point where I was pulling for them to come through and live happily ever after.
The comedy is a bit hit-and-miss. To put a mathematical figure, I’d say that about 30-35% of the jokes hit the mark while 65-70% don’t. That figure may sound bad, but still – 30-35% is nothing to sneeze at. I earnestly chuckled during the glove scene in the bathroom, his dating app mishap in the park, and a few other scenes.
Of course, the movie is no masterpiece. It loses points for creativity. If you’ve read the synopsis or watched even one trailer, then you already know how the core plot will go. There’s a lot of rom-com 101 elements in here
And as I said – about 65-70% of the jokes fall flat. There are some lame jokes like Owen’s remark, “Does the chef recommend that my girlfriend sleep with another guy?” And I didn’t like the running gag with Owen’s mother and the crass kid.
The 2 leads, again, are charismatic and good-looking. But those qualities sometimes work to a fault. A few of the slapstick moments feel jarring because he looks like the star quarterback in HS while she looks like a beauty queen. Really, some jokes felt as if they were designed for a rom-com led by Jason Biggs / Michael Cera / Alyson Hannigan / Molly Shannon etc.
