I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not 2026 Tv Show Review
No matter what you think of Chevy professionally or as a person, this was, generally speaking, interesting and well-done.
Before watching, I saw him as someone who has entertained and made me laugh from SNL and a few movies, and I came away from this documentary with a somewhat deeper knowledge and understanding of him as a human being, husband, and father…and where a lot of his humor and challenges came from, which apparently is from his difficult role as a son.
Despite his professional reputation – proclaimed as negative by some – it seems pretty clear that he has a great family and is a good husband and father…and his talent on screen can’t be denied.
There were a few issues with this production, however. First, regarding the interviewer: either commit fully to the banter bit with Chevy, or leave it out altogether…the middle ground leaves the viewer to wonder if she was coming from a somewhat hostile angle. Second, what on earth was Ryan Reynolds doing there? There is seemingly no actual connection to Chevy, and he offered absolutely nothing of any substance…so his (thankfully small) presence in this was bizarre. Third, how do you do a documentary on Chevy Chase’s life and career and completely leave out “Seems Like Old Times”? Not a mention…not a clip…not even still shot. Crazy. Also, one wishes this could have gone a little deeper, but based on Chevy’s own words, perhaps he didn’t want that.
And a note to Lorne Michaels: there is absolutely no way whatsoever to reasonably spin not having Chevy in a sketch and onstage at the 50th – sure, he’s not the entire show and is one of many stars, but he is to SNL what, say, Farrah is to Charlie’s Angels, or Suzanne to Three’s Company (and so on) – – even if he was difficult, he was a huge part of the start/early success of the show (you know, back when SNL was actually funny & when the show was cool enough to make fun of *both* political sides – remember that?). Obviously the buck stopped with you, so your decision to not make absolutely sure he was highlighted in some way only made you look ridiculous – so, deservedly, Chevy gets the last laugh.
