Ricky Gervais: Mortality 2026 Tv Show Review
It just seems to be the cycle now that every two years, Netflix will wheel out Gervais to give us another hour of the same tired old statements.
Moan about virtue signalling (pause for applause), talk about how great Free Speech is (pause for applause), talk about how silly hate crime is (pause for applause). Anne Frank joke, recycled Karl Pilkington joke, walk offstage. Repeat two years later. And all of this while completely misunderstanding any of the nuance of what he’s discussing.
In the interim, deflect any criticism as ludicrous sensitivity and performative outrage, and repeat that they’re just jokes – like that actually means something.
You don’t have to be a comedian that talks about minorities, politics, culture war issues, etc. But if you do, just put in a bit more effort than this, and not act surprised when people identify you as right-wing when all you appear to do is mock anyone who has empathy for cultural sensitivities. You can absolutely mock that, but don’t give us false premises about how everyone brings up that “if it were a hate crime, it would have been worse” whenever a tragedy occurs. I’m sure a handful of people have said that online. It’s not actually a ‘thing’ though.
This man used to be a Titan of comedy. Now I find myself watching more out of blind hope that I’ll get a laugh of of things. But I just end up sad.
