The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act 2026 Movie Review
I would first like to say that, overall, I find this show to be very good (an 8/10 for me). Here I am reviewing the film comprising of episodes 8 and 9.
It is clear that Gooseworx is a very talented and passionate woman. I have seen all of her animations prior to this show and I have been impressed by them as I have been impressed by the majority of this show.
This finale, however, is a mixed bag for me. On the on hand – the animation, music and voice acting are fantastic. The overall point and themes are genuinely compelling to me and I understand that this was always a “character” show, not a “lore” one. I even applaud the fact that GW ended up straying quite far from (the show’s main inspiration) Harlan Ellison’s infamous horror story “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” in terms of character work. The show is not in his shadow anymore and I’m happy with that.
However, I find myself conflicted by the overall execution and priorities taken in the 9th episode. It seems to me like the movie should have been 9 and a 10th episode instead of the 8th one because there is so much character work that needs to be done and unfortunately I think many of them got sidelined. It is nice that there was no fear to have so much of the conflict be done through dialogue, but there was clearly not enough time to flesh everything out. I enjoyed ALL of these characters in the show, not just the three that are highlighted in the finale. I would also say that, without spoiling anything, a certain character fate should not have been reversed the way it did. It felt a little silly, though I do understand why it was done.
Finally, I find the structure of the film itself to be a little too “wonky.” It really feels like two episodes stitched together in a way that takes me out.
To conclude, I am glad this show exists and that it was popular enough for this kind of cinema closure. I just wish they left the thing in the oven a little longer. A few more rewrites, touch ups and a bit more organizing would have made this a far better experience. Still, I’m glad I went to see it in the theatre. It was nice to see it packed and filled with people of all ages. Not everything has that kind of pull.
