The 2025 revival attempt Troll 2 arrives with the ambition of updating a cult-mocked title, yet the final product is an unmistakable misfire. From its opening moments, the film struggles under the weight of cheap CGI and a tonal confusion that never resolves itself. Instead of embracing a unique identity or offering a creative reinterpretation, the movie stumbles into a chaotic blend of animated trolls and live-action characters that feels instantly dated. What could have been an intriguing visual hybrid becomes one of the film’s biggest liabilities.
The visual effects are the most glaring issue. The trolls themselves look distractingly artificial, as if rendered with outdated tech that fails to meet even modest expectations for 2025. Worse, the internal logic of their abilities is inconsistent-one troll can suddenly overpower all the others with no explanation, underscoring just how underdeveloped the worldbuilding is. The film repeatedly draws attention to its own flaws, and the lopsided battle scenes make it nearly impossible to take any of it seriously.
Narratively, the screenplay offers very little to hold onto. It plays out like a series of disconnected encounters between digital creatures and confused human actors, without any meaningful escalation or emotional stakes. The pacing drags in the middle stretch, offering neither tension nor humor, and the “troll whisperer” subplot lands as unintentionally comical. Nothing about the storyline feels purposeful, and every attempted beat comes across as generic or half-formed.
Direction is another major weak point. The film never gives the impression that there is a clear vision behind the camera; instead, it feels like an experiment assembled on the fly. Scenes shift awkwardly, character motivations are nonexistent, and the performances come across as disposable because the film never invests in anyone long enough for the audience to care. By the halfway mark, it is painfully obvious that the production lacked coherence from the start.
Compounding the issues is the language barrier for general audiences. Released in a non-English language without a strong cast to draw attention, the film struggles to find its footing among global viewers. None of the actors deliver standout work, though it’s difficult to fault them when the screenplay gives so little to work with. The whole ensemble feels interchangeable, as if anyone could have filled any role without changing the outcome.
In the end, Troll 2 never justifies its existence. What should have been a bold or at least entertaining reimagining becomes a muddled showcase of poor CGI, shallow characters, and misguided creative decisions. It is technically unconvincing, narratively hollow, and stylistically outdated-a project that seems confused about why it was made in the first place. For curious viewers, it may offer mild intrigue, but for most, it will land exactly as it plays: a hollow, expendable experiment that fails to enchant, thrill, or even amuse.
