Netflix’s latest micro drama, Between Father and Son (Entre Padre e Hijo) is a Mexican thriller about a woman who finds herself investigating her fiancee’s mysterious parts.

No one is ready to see what the truth will be. Although there are a few angles that I felt could have been removed to focus on the main mystery, there’s enough here to make for a compelling watch.

Between Father and Son tells the story of Barbara, a lawyer married to Alvaro, a pilot. His wife went missing six years ago and has been declared legally dead. However, he keeps on having nightmares about killing his wife.

He takes Barbara to his family home in La Perla, and she begins feeling that she is being watched.

However, things take a steamy turn when Barbara meets Iker, Alvaro’s son. The attraction between Iker and Barbara does not go unnoticed and matters complicate quickly. Old mysteries unravel as Barbara not only solves the mystery of Alvaro’s wife’s past, but also of her own heart.

Although the show makes a point of telling us that Barbara is a lawyer and Alvaro, a pilot, these professions don’t make much of a difference to the story.

Barbara’s law degree is not put to use, and neither is Alvaro’s flight knowledge, beyond making a few checks on his ex-wife Fernanda, who works as a stewardess.

Alvaro’s mother, Margarita and sister Gabriela are showing red flags signs from the start. There is certainly something very fishy with these women that go beyond the realms of a toxic and controlling relationship.

Margarita is a classic matriarch that we see in melodramas. She is controlling, manipulating and stubborn, making lives difficult for everyone.

Alvaro’s son Iker and daughter Leonora do not add much to the plot though. Iker is attracted to Barbara and does not stop showing her feelings. Both of them forget that Alvaro will be hurt and carry on their affair.

Leonora is being brainwashed by her grandmother and does not do anything more than be a brat and rebel who hates Barbara. Iker speaks in vague summaries too and only speaks clearly when he wanted to show Barbara how much he wanted to bed her.

Iker’s girlfriend Luna is another toxic character in the show. She threatens and blackmails Iker about his affair so that he will stay with her. Her exit from the story is almost imperceptible.

Other supporting characters like Franco, Alvaro’s cousin and the investigator add some element to the mystery around Fernanda.

Between Father and Son is certainly not a show to watch with the family, but if you’re looking for a quick, dramatic micro-series to binge, this is a decent pick.

That said, the affair between Iker and Barbara feels unnecessary and doesn’t add much to the central mystery surrounding Fernanda’s disappearance.

There’s clearly an attempt to mirror Álvaro’s sense of betrayal after Fernanda and Franco’s affair, but that never quite lands with enough weight. Still, despite that misstep, Between Father and Son remains a solid, watchable drama and worth checking out for anyone after something short, messy, and dramatic.
